YOUR SUPPORT HELPS US DEFEND VICTIMS OF SCAMS
Legal Aid Attorney Molly Bohanan is a member of our Low Income Taxpayer Clinic Team, which represents clients with a variety of IRS disputes.
Ms. C was in a panic. She’d received a letter from the IRS saying she owed $187,000. When she called them, they referred her to Legal Aid’s Low Income Taxpayer Clinic (LITC).
She was one of thousands of Americans who had fallen victim to a romance scam. The scammer stole money from Ms. C, took out loans and filed a fraudulent tax return in her name. As a result, Ms. C was assessed a tax penalty by the IRS on top of being out the money scammed from her.
Legal Aid Attorney Molly Bohanan represented Ms. C to resolve the tax liability problem. Ultimately she submitted an offer in compromise to the IRS on Ms. C’s behalf, which the IRS accepted.
Thanks to Legal Aid’s efforts, the entire tax debt was forgiven after receipt of a $150 payment from Ms. C.
Support from generous individuals like you will sustain our capacity to advocate for more individuals like Ms. C.
