YOUR SUPPORT HELPS KEEP FAMILIES SAFE AND STABLE
When Susan feared for the safety of the child in her care, Legal Aid stepped in to secure legal custody.
Baby W at Susan’s home.
“Baby W,” born to parents who struggled with addiction, began his life with a month-long hospital stay due to severe withdrawal symptoms. Another family member obtained legal custody to care for the child, but he was intentionally injured soon after.
“Susan,” a family friend, obtained emergency legal custody of Baby W and filed for legal custody. Months later, when the family member wanted the baby back, Susan, concerned for his safety, turned to Legal Aid.
Legal Aid successfully represented Susan at the custody trial. Today, Baby W is safe and happy with Susan as his kinship caregiver.
Currently, thousands of Ohio children live informally with caregiver relatives or friends who provide a vital safety net when their parents cannot care for them.
Your generous support will help our Kinship Care Team assist these and other families in navigating the justice and child welfare systems so they can maintain a safe, stable environment for the children in their care.
